Netflix calls out 53 people who are binge-watching 'A Christmas Prince'

DreamWorks

Netflix traditionally keeps its subscriber data a secret (they recently released a brief report of the highlights of user behaviour for 2017), but revealed it for comedic purposes, and many weren't happy about that.

Many other reactions were lighter, with several people taking the opportunity to say that Netflix itself was hurting them - either by pulling their favorite shows or with its disappointing selection.

So, is this an attempt by the streaming service to create buzz and get more people to watch yet another mediocre Christmas flick?

We shouldn't assume that laws favoring consumer privacy are permanent, that Netflix data will always be anonymized to an extent, or that the internet will continue to operate on the terms to which we're accustomed (see: Net neutrality). I mean, jeez, Netflix is offering tinsel-dusted gruel on its platform and mocking people who consume said gruel every single day (for 18 days).

Netflix has issued a statement after posting a controversial tweet about users' viewing habits.

'I'm now concerned with my love for @Netflix Subgenre Crime Documentaries choices unfairly profiling me!'

The company has picked up criticism this week, after revealing that 53 people watched A Christmas Prince 18 days in a row.

Kim Kardashian Opens Up About Losing an Embryo and Choosing Surrogacy
Khloe isn't placated, though, because everyone already knows, so she doesn't see the point of tip-toeing around. Obviously, Khloé and Kourtney were really excited for her, but Kim wasn't letting herself get too pumped yet.

-How many employees have access to people's viewing habits?

Which would go down a bit easier if the original tweet wasn't binge-shaming 53 individual customers ... but okay.

According to Shane Dingman, a reporter with The Globe, this isn't the first time that Netflix has shared viewer preferences, since the company previously "sent Canadian journos an example of a user who watch Lord of the Rings Return of the King 361 times in a year".

'How do you expect a store to run if they don't know how their products are being used? One user even compared the tweet to "bullying".

The playful Netflix Twitter elf even tweeted back some sass at some of its responders.

When you start thinking about the amount of data that's floating out there about you, it's better to not think about it.
