Dislike: Facebook Defends Its Business Model, Denies 'Ripping Society Apart'

Chamath Palihapitiya

Now, this revelation seems quite surprising to come from the makers of the social media, while Chamath Palihapitiya, former vice president of user growth, who had previously worked at Facebook from 2005 to 2011, has also opened up at a recent public discussion at the Stanford Graduate School of Business.

A former Facebook exec has admitted that he bans his children from using the site - saying he feels "tremendous guilt" for his part in creating the service now used by billions. "I think in the back, deep, deep recesses of, we kind of knew something bad could happen". But I think the way we defined it was not like this'. "It is a point in time where people need to hard break from some of these tools and some of things you rely on - the short term dopamine-driven feedback loops that we have created are destroying how society works".

As the discussion grows regarding foreign actors potentially influencing the outcome of the U.S. elections in the USA using Facebook posts and ads, and the weaponization of the Internet for propaganda around the world, there is growing concern that social media is starting to change how the world works, but not for the better.

Facebook is also under pressure over posts disseminated by Russian-linked agents that have been accused of influencing the United States presidential election a year ago. And that has led to a sad sate of affairs: "No civil discourse, no cooperation; misinformation, mistruth". The tech giant, along with rivals Twitter and Google, testified before Congress last month about the impact of social networks on last year's U.S. presidential election, and how Russian agents leveraged social media to divide Americans.

Chamath also talked about how users curate their lives around a "perceived sense of perfection" because they get rewarded in "hearts, likes, and thumbs-up". "And instead, what it is is fake, brittle popularity that's short-term and leaves you even more, admit it, vacant and empty before you did it. Think about that, compounded by 2 billion people". Parker said he doesn't use Facebook and anxious what it is doing to our children. "This is a global problem".

LG launches V30+ with 6-inch OLED display for Rs 44990
LG V30 + comes with Android 7.1.2 Nougat right out of the box, and LG will soon release the next version update for this device. This phone is packed with 3,300mAh battery with Quick Charge 3.0 which can charge from zero to 50 percent in around 30 minutes.

Last month in November, Sean Parker Facebook's first president had spoken about his regrets for his role in creating Facebook. "Because your behaviors, you don't realize it, but you are being programmed".

As for his own children, "They're not allowed to use this s**t". "It was unintentional, but now you gotta decide how much you're willing to give up, how much of your intellectual independence".

Joining Facebook to help grow their user base in 2005, Palihapitiya said to the Business Insider in 2013 that he admired his former boss Mark Zukerberg saying that "he doesn't get influenced by ego" and Palihapitiya said that he entered Facebook with a 'huge chip on his shoulder'.

That appeared to be a reference not only to "fake news" that's flooding feeds in the U.S., but also recent reports of dictatorial regimes in the Philippines, Turkey and Kenya using Facebook to target political dissenters.
