That Was Quick: Apple Sued For Slowing Down iPhones

Apple CEO Tim Cook talks about the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus during an Apple event in San Francisco

In the US, iPhone owners from several states, including Illinois, Ohio, Indiana and North Carolina, filed lawsuits against Apple in federal courts in Chicago and Los Angeles late last week.

Sources suggest that Apple is likely to launch three iPhone models next year, and renowned KGI securities analyst Ming Chi Kuo reveals that all of them could feature much larger batteries compared to current-gen iPhones.

Apple rolled out the controversial update with iOS 10.2.1 for the iPhone 6 and SE models and iOS 11.2 for the iPhone 7 models.

Ala Abdulla and Lance Raphael, both of Illinois; Sam Mangano, of Ohio; Ryan Glaze, of IN; and Kirk Pedelty, of North Carolina, all said they purchased new iPhones after earlier models grew sluggish.

"Apple's decision to purposefully ... throttle down these devices", it says, "was undertaken to fraudulently induce consumers to purchase the latest" iPhone.

James Vlahakis, an attorney representing the plaintiffs in the Chicago lawsuit, said he has been contacted by more iPhone users who say they suffered the same problem and is considering amending the lawsuit to include a request for Apple to provide battery replacements or offer refunds to consumers who purchased devices unnecessarily.

This campaign would not be possible without the support of the volunteers who worked so tirelessly throughout the campaign. That's enough to provide a family with two bags of groceries or provide shelter for a night.

Apple did the changes through a software update, but it has failed to announce users in advance. Apple didn't respond to a message Friday seeking comment.

Apple's disclosure came after iPhone users on Reddit reported that replacing batteries on older phones appeared to improve their phones' speed.

According to Atlas Consumer Law, Apple's failure to inform consumers these updates would wreak havoc on the phone's performance is being deemed purposeful, and if proven, constitutes the unlawful and decisive withholding of material information.

It was John Poole, Founder of Canada-based Primate Labs and Geekbench developer, who analysed the data from the performance testing on a sample set of approximately 100,000 iPhone 6s and 7 devices running different versions of iOS.

Now, this essentially means that Apple could be gunning for better battery life with future iPhone models, though that doesn't seem to be the case.

"We think they could have extended the phones' life if (Apple) had been more honest", he said.
