Sound of Music actress Heather Menzies-Urich passes away

The Sound of Music star Heather Menzies-Urich has passed away at 68.

The actress died on Christmas Eve, surrounded by family.

Menzies-Urich's death comes less than a year after Charmian Carr, who played eldest von Trapp sibling Liesl.

The widow of actor Robert Urich, she was recently diagnosed with cancer, according to her son Ryan Urich.

She was diagnosed with glioblastoma multiforme about a month ago, and her health declined rapidly, her son Ryan Urich said.

Heather dedicated her entire life to creating a foundation named after him that was meant to raise money for cancer research.

Menzies-Urich played Louisa von Trapp, the third-oldest of the seven von Trapp children, in the film adaptation of the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical that starred Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer.

"The Sound of Music" cast member was 68.

The movie also won no less than five Academy Awards, including Best Picture. On television, she appeared as a fugitive in "Logan's Run" and had guest spots on "Dragnet", "Bonanza", "Marcus Welby, M.D." and other series.

She married Robert Urich in 1975; he died in 2002.

She's survived by her 3 children, a bunch of grandchildren and one great grandchild.
