More Pregnant Women Use Marijuana

Trends in Marijuana Use Among Pregnant Females in California, 2009-2016 | Lifestyle Behaviors | JAMA | The JAMA

Nevertheless, there were also women who stated that they hadn't used marijuana in the last month, although they had a positive urine test.

The problem? Even as public approval of pot continues to grow, we do not have enough information on the effects of marijuana on developing fetuses or young children, and what we do know is cause for concern.

More pregnant California woman are apparently smoking for two these days, as a new report reveals that marijuana use has increased among pregnant moms in The Golden State.

JAMA conducted a study, called Trends in Self-reported and Biochemically Tested Marijuana Use Among Pregnant Females in California From 2009-2016. Data gathered in 2016 alone showed that nearly 25 percent of expecting teenagers and one out of five pregnant women age 18 to 24 had been using cannabis. A study found 19 percent of women ages 18 to 24 tested positive for marijuana.

This study showed the numbers of pregnant women in California consuming cannabis rise almost two-fold when compared to a previous study conducted in 2009.

In women older than 34, marijuana use increased from about 2 percent to about 3 percent.

Researchers have observed a disturbing trend among pregnant women.

An Epic Super Blue Blood Moon Is Coming to Ring in 2018
Finally, the supermoon, or second full moon of the month, will take place the night before the second full moon on January 30. Scientists say the moon will at its closest point from earth and will have an eerie, fainter-than-normal glow.

The study tested more than 30,000 women during each year of the eight-year study, using questionnaires and analyzing urine toxicology tests. In the United States, 29 states and the District of Columbia have legalized medical marijuana, and seven states and DC have legalized marijuana for recreational use as well.

"The impacts of prenatal marijuana use haven't been very well studied", Young-Wolff said. The combination of increased risk for low gestational weight and preterm birth puts babies born to women who smoked weed during pregnancy at greater odds for NICU (neonatal intensive care unit) admittance. They asked these women to fill out a survey.

According to Newsweek, the committee opinion stated that even though most of the women think that smoking marijuana is safe during their pregnancy, they shouldn't feel encouraged to use it, as scientists don't yet know what smoking marijuana is doing to the fetuses, as definite study evidence doesn't exist yet.

"Right now, we follow the guidelines from the CDC and the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, which are to not use marijuana in pregnancy in first, second or third trimester, that has not changed", Dr. Navizadeh said. "The brain develops through the whole pregnancy, so there is no safe window".

"These results matter", Volkow told Medscape, "because, compared with pregnant adults, pregnant teens are at increased risk for having pregnancy-related complications, premature delivery, and delivering babies with developmental problems".

Morning sickness affects a significant percentage of pregnant women.
