16-year-old accused of killing family, friend on New Year's Eve

4 Family Members Killed in Shooting in New Jersey Sources

This is heartbreaking. A 16-year-old boy from New Jersey is being held in police custody after four people were shot to death with an automatic rifle in their Long Branch home on New Year's Eve, authorities said on January 1.

A joint investigation by the Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office and Long Branch Police Department is still ongoing.

A 16-year-old boy opened fire on his entire family in their New Jersey home on New Year's Eve, killing four people, including his parents and his 18-year-old sister. "I can not even describe the type of people they were so just believe me when I say how great they were".

The prosecutor said the teenager's grandfather and brother were not targeted and left the home unharmed, according to The A.P. There was no immediate word on a motive for the killings.

Police responded to a 911 call of shots fired at the residence at 11:30 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 31, 2017.

"I walked outside at midnight".

Though he lives on the same street as the family, he did not know them, he said.

The prosecutor's office said it appears the teen used a semi-automatic rifle to kill his victims.

"The weapon was legally owned and registered to a family member", Gramiccioni said. The teen is expected to make his first appearance before a judge Tuesday.
