Packers Expected to Fire Dom Capers

Turn your feline into the purr-fect Packers fan

ESPN was the first to report the Capers news Saturday night and the Packers were not about to confirm it after falling to the Lions in Detroit 35-11, ending their season at 7-9.

ESPN also reported that several defensive coaches will be let go. But it's been downhill over the past several seasons with Green Bay's defense ranking in the bottom half of the National Football League in three of the past five years. They allowed 24.0 points per game. That includes the squad that went on to win Super Bowl XLV against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Capers has been defensive coordinator since 2009. He holds a 48-80 regular-season coaching record for the Carolina Panthers (1995-1998) and Houston Texans (2002-2005).

Should Capers, 67, decide to retire, it would end a coaching career that began in 1972 as a graduate assistant at Kent State.

Instant analysis of Chargers' 30-17 victory vs. Raiders Week 17
This will be the first time since the mid-1990s that the Raiders have played in their former home of Los Angeles. As they prepare to tackle the Raiders this Sunday, the Chargers do have a few question marks health-wise.

This season, the Packers rank 22nd in total defense, the same mark they had previous year. He coached the Packers defensive line for the last nine years.

Green Bay Packers Defensive Coordinator Dom Capers is seen on the field during warmups prior to the NFC Divisional Playoff game against the Dallas Cowboys at AT&T Stadium.

If Green Bay opts to go outside the organization, the Journal-Sentinel reported that candidates may be Chicago defensive coordinator Vic Fangio, Gregg Williams of the Cleveland Browns and Steve Spagnuolo, who served as interim head coach of the New York Giants after Ben McAdoo was sacked.
