Could chocolate disappear in the next 40 years?

The typical Western consumer eats an average of 286 chocolate bars a year according to research

But in countries such as Côte d'Ivoire and Ghana they are fast running out of usable farm land with officials now facing a dilemma of whether to move into terrain which is currently preserved for wildlife.

Climate change has jeopardized the very existence of chocolate: according to the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, a temperature rise of 2.1 degrees centigrade could leave humanity without chocolate by the year 2050.

Cacao plants, and the chocolate that is made from their beans, could disappear as early as 2050.

Forbes reports that cacao plants, the natural source of chocolate, are in danger due to climate change and fungal disease. But there's one glimmer hope on the horizon: Mars-the candy company which makes such chocolate treats as the Snickers and the Twix bar-has teamed up with the University of California on a new method that may help save future cacao crops. These trees can grow only about 20 degrees north and south of Ecuador - and thrive under specific conditions such as high humidity and rain.

Mars, which would obviously be majorly affected by a drop in chocolate supply, pledged $1 billion back in September to reduce its carbon footprint by more than 60 percent by 2050. The project stems from a new technology, CRISPR, which changes DNA to make crops more reliable and cheaper, helping areas affected by climate change, according to Business Insider.

Kim says N. Korea's nuclear weapons will prevent war with US
If the North Koreans conduct an additional test of a nuclear bomb -- their seventh -- "I would say 70 percent", he said. Kim also emphasized that "the nuclear button is always on my desk", which he said is "not blackmail but reality".

Mars' decision to collaborate with UC Berkeley scientists is a part of this initiative. The company's chief sustainability officer, Barry Parkin, told BI UK his company is trying "to go all in". Although her invention has been viewed as a way to rid humans of diseases and disorders, she believes it has more potential in the improvement of foods.

"By and by, I'd love a tomato plant with organic product that remained on the vine longer", Doudna revealed to Business Insider.

Doudna established a company called Caribou Biosciences to incorporate CRISPR, and has additionally authorized the innovation to rural company DuPont Pioneer for use in crops like corn and mushrooms.

The good news is that any chocolate shortage won't hit us out of nowhere in 2018.
