Hoda Kotb named co-anchor of 'Today' show

News on Tuesday officially named veteran reporter Hoda Kotb to replace disgraced anchor Matt Lauer on the "Today" show.

"Sounds like you want a steak, not an anchor", Roker commented, quoting the tweet in question.

On Tuesday morning, she made her first official appearance as co-anchor for the show with an introduction from Guthrie, who has co-hosted "TODAY" since 2012.

In addition to co-anchoring the first two hours of Today, Kotb will also continue to co-host the fourth hour of the show with Kathie Lee Gifford. After the episode began, with Kotb's name appearing in Today's opening announcement for the first time, Savannah Guthrie made the announcement public, saying it had to be "the most popular decision NBC News have ever made".

The pairing of two women is a departure from the typical man-and-woman morning show format.

"Hoda, you are a partner and a friend and a sister and there is no one I'd rather be doing this with", Guthrie said. "Let's give her a round of applause", Guthrie said, grinning.

Kotb said she was pinching herself as the show kicked off its new era.

Northeastern US gripped by record cold, snow forecast later in week
The National Weather Service issued a winter storm watch on Tuesday afternoon for the shore area. In Aberdeen, South Dakota, the mercury dropped to a record-breaking minus 32 (-36 Celsius).

In a statement to staff, NBC News chair Andy Lack said, "Over the past several weeks, Hoda has seamlessly stepped into the co-anchor role alongside Savannah, and the two have quickly hit the ground running".

They are the first all-woman pair to anchor the NBC news program. "They have an undeniable connection with each other and most importantly, with viewers, a hallmark of Today".

Kotb had been filling in for Matt Lauer ever since he was sacked late November following allegations of sexual misconduct.

Kotb joined NBC News in 1998 as a Dateline NBC correspondent, after working in local news in New Orleans.

Lauer's eventual replacement had always been the subject of internal angst but with a sudden decision forced upon the network, Kotb's performance made it easier.

NBC fired Lauer in response to an allegation brought by a younger female colleague who said Lauer sexually harassed her at the 2014 Sochi Olympics, and continued afterward.
