Spotify facing $1.6B lawsuit from Tom Petty, Neil Young's publisher

Daniel Ek

It seems that along with new opportunities, 2018 is bringing some of the same old headaches for music-streaming giant Spotify, as it has been announced today that they have been slapped with a $1.6 billion suit by Wixen Music Publishing.

Wixen Music Publishing says Spotify has infringed on copyrights of songs including the Doors' Light My Fire and Tom Petty's Free Fallin'. Spotify is the world's most dominant music streaming and limited downloading service.

For more details on both of these cases, review the full Class Action lawsuit filings below provided to you courtesy of Patently Apple.

The lawsuit claims Spotify did not get the necessary mechanical licenses "to reproduce and/or distribute musical compositions on its service".

Abbas slams Israeli Likud decision to annex settlements in West Bank
Although the committee is only an advisory body, its decisions reflect the prevailing opinions in Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's party.

In May, the company proposed a $US43 million ($A60 million) settlement to resolve a class action suit from a collective of songwriters, including David Lowery and Melissa Ferrick, that in September was lambasted as being inadequate by a group of songwriters and actors, and more lawsuits ensued.

Wixen, which is seeking a jury trial against the Swedish company, presented a list of 10,784 songs for which it questioned Spotify's permission to stream.

Last week (December 29), Thom Yorke once again shared his concerns about the way Spotify pays musicians. "Wixen has and, to the extent not yet effected, will opt out the Works from the Proposed Settlement".

Instead, the company says it "was and is desirous of sitting down with Spotify to work out an amicable settlement for its past infringements and unlicensed uses, and seeks to work out a go-forward license which is fair to all parties".
