United States service member killed in Afghanistan

One U.S. service member was killed and four others were wounded in a combat engagement in Achin district of eastern Afghan province of Nangarhar on Monday, the coalition forces said Tuesday.

Two wounded soldiers were in stable condition at a medical unit and the other two have returned to duty, officials said. As we have reported, "the recent commitment of about 3,000 additional troops will bring the total number of USA service members in Afghanistan to between 14,000 and 15,000", according to the special inspector general for Afghanistan reconstruction. "Let us honor Sergeant Golin's extraordinary courage by reflecting on his commitment to the nation he loved, and by recognizing the profound debt of gratitude we owe to him and to his family for their sacrifice", Booker said.

Army Gen. John W. Nicholson Jr., the senior US military commander in Afghanistan, issued a statement expressing condolences for the lost service member.

Gresback said USA and Afghan forces are making "significant progress" in the area, and predicted a long winter for militants in the region.

Long lines for DFW global passengers due to US Customs computer issue
Officials said the issue lasted about two hours, leading to longer lines and frustration among global travelers. Although the systems are working again, San Diego travelers may still face a backlog of lines and delays.

He added: "At this very hard time our heartfelt sympathies go out to the families and friends of our fallen and wounded brothers". The Washington Post reveals that eleven of those fatalities occurred during combat with seven taking place in the Nangahar province.

This area, along Afghanistan's border with Pakistan, has been particularly deadly for US troops in the past year, NPR's Tom Bowman reports.

According to Nicholson, there are only about 1,000 ISIS fighters left in Afghanistan, with between 600 and 800 of them in Nangahar province. President Donald Trump a year ago announced plans to strengthen the United States military presence in Afghanistan, signing off on a modest surge of several thousand more United States troops tasked primarily with conducting counterterrorism missions and training Afghan security forces.
