Apple developers rack up $26.5bn from apps in 2017

Developers who make apps for iOS earned $26.5bn in 2017, Apple said in a statement on Thursday, as users snapped up breakout hits including games like Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp, and Monument Valley 2.

Indeed, $300 million came in on New Year's Day alone, presumably as everyone made unwise in-app purchases to get through their hangovers.

$890 million in purchases over the week starting December 24, a week that also saw a record number of customers downloading apps.

It was a very happy New Year for Apple's App Store.

One killed as balloon crash at Egyptian city of Luxor
The accident occurred in Luxor, in southern Egypt, which is popular with tourists due to its number of ancient temples and ruins. A woman was killed and 19 others were injured Friday morning when a hot air balloon crashed in Egypt, according to authorities.

Apple also notes there are now almost 2000 ARKit-enabled apps across all categories of the App Store, while the latter now sees over 500 million customer visits every week. And Pokemon Go nabbed the top app spot once again, re-launching the app late in the year with new AR features - which Apple, naturally, pointed out were built on top of ARKit. Hit games past year included titles like Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp, Monument Valley 2, King of Glory, Clash of Clans and Candy Crush Saga. Popular AR games include CSR Racing 2, Stack AR and Kings of Pool.

As the App Store is set to celebrate its ten year anniversary this July, iOS developers have been paid over $86 billion Dollars, since the store launched in 2008.

Apple revolutionized personal technology with the introduction of the Macintosh in 1984.

Still, Wall Street analysts use these data points to back into an estimation of how big Apple's App Store is, especially as it becomes more important to Apple's services business, which executives have talked up in the past two years.
