Past year was the safest in the history of commercial aviation

Airplane

Airlines recorded zero accident deaths in commercial passenger jets last year, that made 2017 the safest year ever for commercial air travel.

A series of safety audits and reports recently published by AirlineRatings.com shows that some carriers are performing better than others in terms of safety, and two airlines based in the United Kingdom are considered the safest as the New Year begins.

Among the top performers are British Airways, Cathay Pacific Airways, Emirates, Japan Airlines, KLM, Virgin Atlantic and Qantas, which received a special nod for an exceptional performance over a 97-year history. "Long established airlines such as Hawaiian and Finnair also have flawless records in the jet era".

The Aviation Safety Network also reported there were no commercial passenger jet deaths in 2017, but 10 fatal airliner accidents resulting in 44 fatalities onboard and 35 persons on the ground, including cargo planes and commercial passenger turbo prop aircraft.

Framed another way: The chances of dying in a plane crash are now one in 16 million, added aviation consultancy group To70. But some airlines lead the pack with safety records and procedures that set the industry benchmark.

The website said it referred to a variety of factors that influence safety for its shortlists, including audits from aviation's governing bodies and lead associations; government audits; the airline's crash and serious incident record and the fleet age.

Much of the credit for reducing passenger airline deaths goes to aircraft safety systems that have virtually eliminated midair collisions between airliners and what is referred to in aviation as "controlled flight into terrain".

What Could Impact Oil Prices in 2018?
WTI prices were further boosted by an EIA report of a 4.6 million barrel weekly drop in USA commercial crude storage levels. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures traded down slightly at around $60.32 United States a barrel at 10:26 a.m.

The site also revealed its list of the world's lowest ranked airlines of the 409 it monitors.

"Airlines and authorities analyze those reports and can take action to make the operation of the airline safer, or even take valuable safety lessons for everyone in the industry", Ranter said.

"All airlines have incidents every day and many are aircraft manufacture issues, not airline operational problems", he said.

"An excellent example of that was the Qantas A380 incident in 2010 when a Rolls Royce engine shattered after take-off from Singapore".

The world's worst airlines have been named and shamed after receiving just one star out of a possible seven.

They were; Air Koryo, Bluewing Airlines, Buddha Air, Nepal Airlines, Tara Air, Trigana Air Service and Yeti Airlines.
