Amazon set to bid for Premier League streaming rights

Sky and BT are “very likely” to face competition from Amazon in the new Premier League rights auction according to a leading analyst

Amazon.com Inc. plans to bid for the rights to stream Premier League matches in the upcoming auction in the United Kingdom, according to a source familiar with the matter, part of a broader strategy to bring more sports content to its global customers. British telecoms Sky and BT won the last auction, which brought in $6.9B.

Sporting events are huge and many companies know this, which is why it isn't surprising that in recent times we've started to hear that many tech companies such as Twitter, Facebook, and more are trying to get the rights to stream various sporting matches and events on their platform in a bid to drive up the number of users.

Could you be watching your club lift the Premier League trophy on an Amazon Prime Video stream from 2019?

Broughton said the online giant is "very likely" to bid for one of the smaller packages in the upcoming auction for Premier League live rights for broadcast in the UK. In August, Amazon outbid Sky for the ATP tour tennis rights.

The pair took big financial hits when they paid a record £5.14bn for domestic Premier League rights in 2015 - nearly £2bn more than they sold for in 2012.

Joe Thornton has chunk ripped out magnificent beard in brawl
Joe Thornton's mountain-man beard was an early casualty Thursday night as the San Jose Sharks visited the Toronto Maple Leafs . Leafs goalie Frederik Andersen , playing in his 100th game as a Leaf, stopped five of six Sharks in the shootout.

It would mean a bumper payday for the Premier League - who raked in more than £8billion from their last domestic and global TV rights auctions - as the Silicon Valley titans have billions to invest.

The cost to BT and Sky is more than £10 million per game and reports suggest that the two companies don't want to pay more than they did last time around.

Industry experts believe Amazon could bid for new packages which allow them to stream all games taking place on certain Bank Holiday or midweek matchdays.

Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN) is making a big push into live streaming sports, and now reportedly has its eyes set on one of the world's most popular soccer leagues.
