HP laptop batteries overheating leads to recall

HP laptop batteries overheating leads to recall

This follows eight reports of lithium-ion batteries overheating and/or melting, and in one case causing a first-degree burn to someone's hand, with three further cases citing resulting property damage (presumably caused by fire, of course) to the tune of $4,500.

HP has announced a recall on batteries in select notebook and mobile workstations sold in recent years.

Consumers are encouraged to immediately stop using these batteries and to visit the Health Canada website to recall the HP batteries to determine if their product is covered and to order another free battery, if applicable. Numerous batteries, however, are internal to the notebooks and mobile workstations, meaning a technician's services will be necessary to replace them. The batteries can not be replaced by customers themselves, the recall noted.

Tesla falls short on Model 3, but overall sales rise in 2017
In total, the company exceeded our previously announced guidance by delivering 101,312 Model S and X vehicles in 2017. The latest production and delivery numbers released by Tesla fall well short of already reduced forecasts.

The website also provides instructions on how to initiate the validation utility to check their battery and what to download if their battery is included in the recall.

The computer maker is providing battery replacement services by an authorized technician at no cost. Affected batteries pose a fire threat and could burn users, so if you've bought such an HP device since late 2015, you should check to find out if you're impacted.

In addition, the company has pushed a BIOS update that puts affected batteries in "Battery Safety Mode", which allows the laptops to continue working without their batteries by connecting to an HP power adaptor.
