Triple talaq bill: Congress issues whip for its members in Rajya Sabha

Triple talaq bill pushed to Budget session will the Centre take ordinance route

Senior Congress leader Anand Sharma moved a notice stating that the triple talaq bill is referred to a Select Committee of Rajya Sabha. To argue that the Opposition did not oppose in the Lok Sabha since it did not have the requisite numbers is to deride the entire parliamentary system which is vitally undergirded by open and frank discussion before the vote in the House.

BJP issues a whip asking all its MPs to remain present in both the houses of Parliament, today.

Lastly, and this is where there is a case for the Government to apply its legal mind before it reintroduces the Bill, there's an objection to making triple talaq a cognisable offence to the extent that it would mean anyone and not just the aggrieved party can lodge a complaint.

However the leading dispensation is hopeful that the opposition would not stall the passage of the Bill in the Upper House. They are not thinking about ensuring justice to the Muslim sisters. Even the reference of the Bill to a select committee can only aid the BJP attempt to burnish its reformist credentials.

"We are committed to it (bill) and assure the Muslim women that this illegal practice (of instant triple talaq) will be abolished", said Mr Naqvi.

ESPN says it has 'addressed' host's 'inappropriate' comments on Trump
Nolan's start at ESPN has been a bit slow, but the network seems to have some interesting plans for her in the near future. During an appearance on Viceland's " Desus & Mero", Nolan called President Donald Trump a "f*cking stupid person".

The rebuttal led to the Upper House getting adjourned, following which Union Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad accused the Congress party of resorting to double standard in the matter of the bill.

"On one hand, you are sending the man to jail, but on the other hand there is no clarification about who will provide maintenance for the woman and her child, so there are many loopholes", Congress Lok Sabha member Ranjeet Ranjan told ANI. The Congress wants the bill referred to a standing committee for review, but the government stood firm on opposing that demand. It had, however, said it might be open to accepting some of the amendments to the bill, as suggested by the Opposition.

Speaking at a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) press conference here, the union minister said, "This winter session was very successful".

The government hopes to find a breakthrough in the standoff over the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill which seeks to outlaw talaq-e-biddat or instant triple talaq and punish offenders with a jail term.
