Massive manhunt for gunman after Pierce County Sheriff’s deputy shot and killed

A burglary investigation that began Sunday night southwest of Tacoma ended with the death of a Pierce County Sheriff's Deputy. The deputy was shot while running after the suspects within 10 minutes of responding to that call for help.

The Pierce County Sheriff's Office deputy came under fire while chasing down the suspects after a 911 call warned of an intruder around 11:30 p.m. local time near Spanaway, about 12 miles south of Tacoma, according to a report.

Police say two suspects were involved.

"I ask all Washingtonians to join me and Trudi in holding in our hearts Deputy McCartney's family, the men and women at the Pierce County Sheriff's Department who serve alongside Deputy McCartney, and all those who serve in law enforcement across our state".

There are road closures as a result, and the Bethel School District has now chose to close its schools today.

The deputy was the first person to arrive on scene. He was last seen wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt and a black beanie.

Bethel School District canceled all classes for Monday out of "an abundance of caution", it reported on its Facebook page.

He was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead around 2 a.m.

A memorial fund was set up to benefit his wife and children.
