For Van Dijk and Liverpool, a Winning Start

From Van Dijk to Bobby Madley Winners and losers from Liverpool 2-1 Everton

It couldn't have gone any better for Virgil van Dijk on his Liverpool debut as he scored the victor against Everton at Anfield six minutes from full-time as the Reds reached the fourth round of the FA Cup on Saturday.

The former Celtic and Groningen central defender played well for the Reds and scored the victor with a brilliant header in the 84th minute.

Except for those few seconds, after 84 minutes, when he wandered up for a corner, rose to meet Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain's cross, and ended his first appearance for Liverpool, his first appearance as a record-breaker, with the winning goal in a 2-1 victory against Everton.

Chris Sutton was also following the match, and the former Celtic striker has pointed out the 26-year-old centre-back's development at the Glasgow giants. "To score a goal is even more special".

A swift counter-attacking move saw Everton get an unlikely equaliser through Gylfi Sigurdsson after the interval. Wayne Rooney scythed down Joe Gomez early on and was shown a yellow card.

Tempers flared when Roberto Firmino was pushed into the advertising hoardings by Holgate before referee Madley stepped in to prevent the incident escalating further following an angry exchange of words. Still, a penalty was awarded and Milner deftly clipped the ball down the middle.

Liverpool hasn't lost to Everton in 16 matches, a club record.

With the way Van Dijk performed just days after being officially announced as a Liverpool player, the future looks bright and suggests that Klopp and his staff have a very clear mindset with the players they want to bring in to their system and how they can best utlitzie them.

Whether Van Dijk possesses those qualities in sufficient quantity to eliminate Liverpool's capacity for panic remains to be seen; it will take a season, maybe more, to establish whether he can do what Klopp believes he can.
