H&M threatened with boycott over "racist" ad

Others pointed out there appeared to be no racial undertones but asked whether there had been a significant'oversight in the advertising campaign

Since the retail image surfaced, many have voiced their frustrations, via social media, on how H&M could so obviously miss the mark.

Over the weekend, social media users claimed that this was racist because monkey is a known racial slur.

UK Labor Party lawmaker Kate Osamor tweeted that she was "totally shocked, dismayed to say the very least" by the image.

The Weeknd, however, is the highest profile celebrity to come out in opposition to the H&M campaign so far.

At the time of writing, the hoodie is still available on the H&M site, although the photo featuring the child has been removed.

The sweatshirt had initially been available in the clothing chain's United Kingdom stores.

"They removed the picture but are still selling the item".

Questlove predicted early Monday that H&M would strike a conciliatory note, but the Roots' drummer/band leader also seemed to be saying it wouldn't be enough. "Now they're trying to COVER IT UP".

CRARR and other activist groups called on H&M to issue a public apology - and it has done just that. How on earth can this be?

H&M is not the first company to find itself under fire over racist advertising.
