What caused protests to flare up in Iran?

French President Emmanuel Macron delivers his New Year wishes to the members of the press corps at the Elysee Palace in Paris France

Nearly a week of sometimes violent protests left at least 22 people dead, with Iranian authorities accusing the United States, Israel, and Saudi Arabia of involvement.

Several countries on the Security Council have blocked or attempted to prevent meetings focused on internal or domestic affairs of United Nations member states in the recent past. "Because in the end, the Iranian people will determine their own destiny", she said.

"The real reason for convening today is not protect human rights or promote the interests of the Iranian people, but rather a veiled attempt to continue to undermine the Iranian nuclear agreement", Nebezia stated.

According to the Iranian authorities more than 450 rioters have been arrested and will be put on trial soon.

Britain and France reiterated that Iran must respect the rights of protesters, but French Ambassador Francois Delattre said the "events of the past days do not constitute a threat to peace and worldwide security".

Efforts by the Trump administration to marshal a muscular worldwide response to Iran's crackdown on anti-government protesters appeared to backfire on Friday (Jan 5) as members of the UN Security Council instead used a special session called by the United States to lecture the USA ambassador on the proper goal of the body and to reaffirm support for the Iran nuclear agreement. The protests are the most widespread of their kind in Iran since the unrest that followed 2009's disputed presidential election.

"This is how we view the American initiative to convene the UN Security Council over a situation that is of purely national concern in Iran".

"It is unfortunate that despite the resistance on the part of some of its members, this council has allowed itself to be abused by the current United States administration in holding a meeting on an issue that falls outside the scope of its mandate", noted Khoshroo.

He added his government has "hard evidence" the recent protests in Iran were "very clearly directed from abroad".

Heated debate took place on the floor of the Security Council at the United Nations headquarters in NY after its 15 members were gathered at the request of the USA to discuss the current situation in Iran.

"The Iranian regime is now on notice".

Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) says antigovernment protests that it blames on foreign instigators have been "defeated".

The UN charter empowers to the council to "investigate any dispute, or any situation which might lead to worldwide friction", she claimed.

British Ambassador Matthew Rycroft concurred with Haley.

In response, big pro-regime rallies have broken out.

US President Donald Trump had refrained from calling for violence or disruptive acts in Iran but had expressed "such respect for the people of Iran as they try to take back their corrupt government", also pledging "great support from the United States at the appropriate time".
