Following his lead, several GOP-led committees are now investigating whether the dossier formed the basis for the FBI's initial investigations.

Feinstein's decision came after a tense back-and-forth between Republicans and Democrats over what to do with the transcript of Simpson's interview, which he provided on August 22. "The only way to set the record straight is to make the transcript public".

Feinstein, released the transcript because she said she felt the public had a right to know what the witness said, especially in light of recent claims by Republicans that the Michael Steele-Fusion GPS dossier was prepared to discredit the Trump campaign. The New York Times reported last month that Papadopoulos told the diplomat that Russian Federation had thousands of emails that would embarrass Clinton and that the Australians' subsequent tip to the FBI about the conversation helped persuade the bureau to investigate potential coordination between Russian Federation and the Trump campaign.

In a statement, Feinstein said that she released Simpson's testimony after conferring with her fellow committee Democrats.

The dossier is a compilation of memos written by Steele during the 2016 campaign that contained allegations of connections between Trump and Russian Federation, including that Trump had been compromised by the Kremlin. In any event, he said don't worry about that, I know the flawless person, I have a contact there, they'll listen to me, they know who I am, I'll take care of it.

Steele later told to Simpson that he believed the FBI would consider his information credible because the Bureau had corroborating intelligence, including from a human source within the Trump organization.

"He thought from his perspective there was an issue - a security issue about whether a presidential candidate was being blackmailed", Simpson said.

"Fusion GPS commends Sen". Neither committee had intentions of releasing the transcripts from its interview with Mr. Simpson.

Ms Feinstein said she released the transcript with the agreement of the other Democrats on the committee, to combat the "innuendo and misinformation" surrounding it.

The demand comes one week after Grassley and Sen.

"This was like, you know, you're driving to work and you see something happen and you call 911", Simpson told investigators.

He also disputed Republican charges that his firm is linked to Democrats, saying the firm takes clients from both sides of the aisle.
