Former housing minister named Conservative Party chairman

Justine Greening

The two-day, drawn out affair that is a reshuffle of the British ministry, which involves those being promoted and often those being demoted arriving at 10 Downing Street before their next career move is announced, began with drama, when the Conservatives official twitter account wrongly announced the new party chairman.

The job Ms Greening turned down, Work and Pensions Secretary, was given instead to Esther McVey, who triggered controversy when she was a junior minister in the department under David Cameron.

Lewis was pictured entering May's office in Downing Street.

"No wonder Theresa May's struggling to negotiate Brexit - she can't even organise a reshuffle", tweeted opposition Labour MP Stephen Kinnock.

While viewed as a chance at a fresh start, the reshuffle brings risks of upsetting the delicate balance of eurosceptic and pro-European ministers.

He was also blamed for the disastrous party conference, where magnetic letters fell off during May's speech which was being televised live.

Despite winning agreement from the European Union to move Brexit talks to a discussion of future trade and a transitional deal, May has been criticised at home for her approach to healthcare, housing, transport and Britain's departure from the bloc.

Israel bans entry to members of groups promoting its boycott
Israel a year ago enacted a law that would ban any activist who "knowingly issues a public call for boycotting Israel". Other than BDS South Africa and BDS Chile, the groups named on the list are located in Europe and North America.

However, it was deleted within seconds, with the Immigration Minister Brandon Lewis later confirmed as taking on the important internal role.

Britain's Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson has kept his portfolio despite a series of high-profile gaffes.

However, many of May's ministers disagree on the shape of the future relationship.

But in a blow to her, the minister for Northern Ireland, James Brokenshire, stepped down because of ill-health. He has failed to bring together feuding political parties in the British province, where the devolved government collapsed a year ago nearly to the day.

James Cleverly has been named as Mr Lewis' deputy, with MPs from the 2015 and 2017 intakes also appointed to help rejuvenate the Conservative Party's grassroots operation.

Junior trade minister Mark Garnier was the first to go, tweeting that he was "very sad to have lost my job" but would support the government from the backbenches of the House of Commons.

It was also briefed as an attempt to introduce new faces into the government, including more women, ethnic minorities and some newer MPs.
