This Wild Video Shows How Alligators Avoid Freezing to Death

A viral video of alligators frozen in an icy pond at North Carolina's Shallotte River Swamp Park has been the talk of social media, with many people wondering whether coldblooded crocodilians can survive in brutally cold temperatures.

Alligators have been filmed in North Carolina trying to stay alive in a frozen pond by sticking their snouts through a sheet of ice.

The "bomb cyclone" that froze the eastern seaboard of the U.S. last week forced many to take extreme measures to stay warm and stay alive, including a group of rather inventive alligators in North Carolina.

Experts say that alligators nearly instinctively know when the pond is about to freeze over.

When the water or air temperature is too low they go into a state of "brumation", which means their metabolism slows down so much that the gators go into a lethargic state.

When the temperature gets warm again and the ice melts, the alligators will then start thermoregulating their body temperatures.

The park later posted an update video on January 9 to show the alligators swimming around after the ice had thawed. "Pretty incredible. ... Look at those teeth".

The 65-acre park and sanctuary has a dozen alligators, all of them "rescues" that were previously kept in captivity.

As for what happens if someone steps on a frozen alligator, experts said it's not likely the animal will react. According to park officials, it's not out of the ordinary - they're just attempting to acclimating to the freezing conditions.

Now you know. See ya later, alligator! That's four counties away from Charlotte.
