Warmer Waters Are Turning Green Turtles Babies Female

Great Barrier Reef Turtles

Many reports have been informed that the rising temperature has affected the lives of marine animals.

The research examined two genetically distinct populations of turtles on the reef, finding the northern group of about 200,000 animals was overwhelmingly female.

According to the paper, climate change could affect the green sea turtle's gender.

"One possibility is shade cloth erected over key nesting beaches, like at Raine Island, to lower nest temperatures to produce more males", he said. Maybe in future, there will be only male turtles.

A turtle's sex is dependent on the temperature at which it is incubated, so warmer nests result in more females.

The "pivotal temperature" that creates a 50/50 split of male and female can be passed down from parent to offspring.

"This research is so important because it provides a new understanding of what these populations are dealing with", Michael Jensen, the study's lead author and a marine biologist with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, said in a statement.

The exploration inspected two hereditarily particular gatherings of turtles, called rookeries, that live in and around the Great Barrier Reef.

However the range which would result in either an all-male or all-female population varies by just a few degrees, scientists said.

Analysts found that grown-ups were 86.8 percent female while adolescent and sub-grown-up turtles were more than 99 percent female in the northern populace. In cooler, southern areas, they found that about 69% of turtles were female, the Guardian reported.

For the green sea turtles that hatched at the northern end of the Great Barrier Reef, something essential for their species' survival is missing: males.

"While these turtles may be half a world away, action to reduce carbon emissions in the United Kingdom can play a vital role in limiting the impact of global warming on green turtles and countless other marine species", he said. Only some duration of cooler years can control the situation.

"Realizing what the sex proportions in the grown-up reproducing populace are today, and what they may look like five, 10 and quite a while from now when these youthful turtles grow up and move toward becoming grown-ups, will be extraordinarily profitable". For years this has sparked concerns that human-induced climate change will cause some species to only produce one sex, leading to extinction.
