Jay Bruce returning to New York Mets

Free-agent outfielder Jay Bruce agreed to a three-year, $39 million deal with the New York Mets on Wednesday night, marking a return to Queens for one of the most consistent left-handed power hitters, a source familiar with the agreement told Yahoo Sports.

Out of contention, the Mets finally shipped Bruce to the Indians in August for minor league relief pitcher Ryder Ryan.

Between the Indians and the Mets, Bruce finished with 36 home runs and 101 R.B.I. - the fifth time he has hit at least 30 home runs and driven in 90 runs in his 10-year career. Bruce came over to the Mets in a deadline deal with the Reds in 2016, and then was traded from NY to Cleveland when the Mets fell out of contention last summer. Since the beginning of 2017, however, Bruce had been the steady engine in the Mets lineup and it's only consistency with Cespedes missing half a season with hamstring injuries.

Mets fans have been clamoring for the team to spend some money to improve the club following its fourth-place finish in the NL East. There are still some glaring needs that have to be addressed before Spring Training starts, and if the organization is serious about contending, they'll have to covered.

Flu season hits early, hard in Texas
There have been 3,854 total flu-associated hospitalizations in OH since flu season began last October, according to ODH. If you experience flu-like symptoms, stay home 24-48 hours after symptoms resolve, unless you are seeking medical care.

Jay Bruce is headed back to NY. Although the Mets have said his rehab is going well, it's questionable whether he'll be ready by Opening Day.

Jeurys Familia will hopefully stay healthy this year, and having guys like AJ Ramos, Jerry Blevins and the aforementioned Swarzak waiting in the wings makes the pen solid. Santana's three-year, $60 million deal with the Phillies is the largest.

The Mets are still in the market for a second baseman or third baseman and some bullpen help.

The Mets are more likely to address their infield needs through free agency, with Todd Frazier, Howie Kendrick, Neil Walker and Jose Reyes among the names under discussion.
