Study Reveals Surprising Consequences Of Trying A Single Cigarette

For those who think one cigarette will not make them addicted to it, here is a warning, it will.

"The majority of people who try a cigarette go on to become regular smokers for at least some period of time, according to new research".

The findings, which were based on responses from over 215,000 survey respondents, provide strong support for prioritizing efforts to decrease cigarette experimentation among adolescents.

"Tobacco use starts in childhood for two-thirds of smokers in the United Kingdom, and this study suggests that even trying a cigarette becomes regular use in most cases", she said. 215000 people were included in 8 surveys that were done in 16 years.

"[This shows] prevention, providing [fewer] opportunities or reasons for young people to try a cigarette, is a good idea", said Peter Hajek, co-author of the research, from Queen Mary University of London.

Data sets from eight surveys were found from the UK, USA, Australia and New Zealand, and the survey methods were found to be on par with best practice.

It was shown that 60.3 percent of respondents had ever tried a cigarette, with an estimated 68.9 percent of these progressing to daily smoking.

I am so grateful and so blessed to have been a part of a MIGHTY ROLLING TIDE, THAT WILL KEEP ON ROLLING AND ROLLING FOREVER. I must take a moment to express my heartfelt appreciation to my family for all of their support through the years.

The conversion rates (from one cigarette to daily smoking habit) varied quite substantially depending on the survey, the lowest being 50 percent (a United States survey) and the highest being 82 percent (a United Kingdom survey).

"We've found that the conversion rate from "first time smoker" to "daily smoker" is surprisingly high", he said.

Prof Hajek added that it doesn't seem to be the case that e-cigarettes are as addictive as conventional cigarettes. So it is just an estimation, and also there is lack of accuracy of people's recall of their smoking history in this study, the lead author informed.

If you have a circle of friends and anyone around you who are daily smokers, then you might have thought to give it a try once for sure. "The presence of nicotine is clearly not the whole story".

The Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency told MPs: 'E-cigs will improve public health if they become a route out of smoking for large numbers of adult smokers, without providing a route into smoking for children and non-smokers or generating new health risks.

In 2016, 15.5% of the adults from the United Kingdom smoked, down from 19.9% in 2010, according to the office for National Statistics.
