China defends 'all-weather' ally Pakistan after Donald Trump claims it protects terrorists

US President Donald Trump

Pakistan Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi chaired a meeting of the National Security Committee (NSC) on Tuesday to discuss US President Donald Trump's move to cut all further aid to Islamabad on charges of harbouring terrorists.

Her statement followed an angry tweet from Trump on Monday that the United States had been rewarded with "nothing but lies and deceit" for giving Pakistan billions in aid. The US has long accused Pakistan of providing safe heavens to the terrorists that the United State hunts in Afghanistan.

Pakistan's foreign minister hit back at Trump.

In an interview to Geo television, Foreign Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif said Pakistan is ready to publicly give an account of "every detail" of USA aid it has received, saying it is already doing all it could to combat terrorism within its borders.

David Hale, the U.S. ambassador to Islamabad, was also summoned by the foreign ministry late on Monday, 1 January, to protest against Trump's withering attack.

Pakistani Defence Minister Khurram Dastgir-Khan rebuked the United States president's tweet and said that though Islamabad was its ally, America has given it nothing but invective and mistrust.

He also added "I welcome today's clarity in President Trump's remarks and propose a joint USA - regional coalition to pressurize the Pakistan military establishment to bring peace to not just Afghanistan but the entire region".

Turkey and the United States called each other unsafe countries
Meanwhile, Turkish officials have been busily firing and arresting tens-of-thousands of people it accuses of having ties to Gulen. Turkey has called for his extradition, but the United States says sufficient evidence has yet to be put to a court.

"We know that Pakistan can do more to fight and stop terrorism and we want them to step up and do that".

Asif said not only did Pakistan find terrorists for the U.S., it also opened itself up for operatives of the now disgraced Blackwater, a firm of private military contractors. The report comes after President Trump warned the country earlier this week over its failure to take a tougher stance against terrorism.

US-Pakistani ties have cooled under Trump, who in August declared that "Pakistan often gives safe haven to agents of chaos, violence, and terror".

In 2017, America withheld $350 million in promised aid to Pakistan over concerns that the government was aiding terrorists. "We will not let Pakistan become a scapegoat this time", said Bilawal.

He added that China is very pleased to see Pakistan involved in the foreign cooperation, counter-terrorism included, based on mutual respect for contributing to the regional stability and peace.

Hitting back at the U.S., the Foreign Office warned against a "malicious campaign" being used to trivialise Pakistan's achievements in the war against terrorism, and noted that "allies do not put each other on notice".
