First Florida snow in 29 years as major storm hits US

The brutal cold comes after a "bomb cyclone" dumped more than a foot of snow across eight states, knocking out power for tens of thousands and deluging streets in MA with icy water.

From Maine to Florida, officials issued weather advisories, winter storm watches, winter storm warnings or blizzard warnings.

The National Weather Service warned of wind gusts hitting near 70mph.

The storm was powered by a rapid plunge in barometric pressure that some weather forecasters were referring to as bombogenesis or a "bomb cyclone" and which brought fast, heavy snowfall and high winds.

A bomb cyclone is also known as a "bombogenesis" which comes from combining "bomb" with "cyclogenesis". Boston is expected to get over 12 inches of snow.

As of 10 a.m., 3,168 flights around the USA were canceled, with airports in New York, New Jersey and Boston hardest hit, according to FlightAware, a Houston-based airline tracking service.

"We want people to stay away from here", Town Administrator Jim Boudreau said.

Maine Gov. Paul LePage announced that all state offices will be closed today.

State Department updates travel advisories so they're understandable
Under the new system, every country has a Travel Advisory, providing levels of advice ranging from 1 to 4. The UK, France and China were included in Level 2 - Be aware of heightened risks to safety and security.

"Travel conditions are expected to be treacherous", LePage said in a statement. Perhaps we could use a little bit of that good old Global Warming that our Country, but not other countries, was going to pay TRILLIONS OF DOLLARS to protect against.

The snow storm brought a break in extreme cold temperatures that have gripped much of the region since Christmas, frozen part of the Niagara Falls, played havoc with public works and impeded firefighting in places where temperatures barely broke 20 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 6 centigrade). Wind chills could dip to minus 40 in New England and Western New York. NY time Thursday, according to data from utility websites compiled by Bloomberg.

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said a winter weather emergency would allow city agencies to "take additional actions to keep us safe". Eastern Massachusetts and most of Rhode Island braced for as much as 3 inches of snow per hour.

"More precisely, it's a mid-latitude cyclone that rapidly intensifies, with a central pressure that drops at least 24 millibars over 24 hours (a millibar measures atmospheric pressure)", NOAA notes. It was also reported on Thursday that four people were killed in North and SC after their vehicles ran off snow-covered roads.

Icy conditions have been reported in the state and authorities closed down over 50 miles of Interstate 10.

More than 70 percent of Newark's flights and 90 percent of New York's LaGuardia flights were also canceled.

Noah has lived in Florida for 16 years and he said these nor'easters happen about once a year, but that this one is stronger than usual.

So far, 17 deaths are being blamed on the dangerously cold temperatures that have been gripping most of the United States for the past several days.
