Nottingham train station has been evacuated this morning after a major fire began at around 6.30am, causing huge disruption.

Superintendent Sandra England, who is leading the British Transport Police response, said: "A joint investigation is now under way with Nottingham Fire and Rescue Service to establish the cause of the fire".

About 60 firefighters fought the blaze at the Nottingham train station, about 130 miles north of London.

Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service tweeted: "There is a fully developed fire in the main concourse of the station - which has spread to the roof".

Flames were seen coming from the station's roof and smoke filled the foyer, prompting the building's evacuation.

Fifty firefighters are tackling a large blaze at Nottingham station.

British Transport Police issued advice to football fans looking to use trains to travel to and from matches saying the station is unlikely to reopen tomorrow.

Train services have been impacted to the extent that East Midlands Trains have advised all customers to avoid travelling to Nottingham on Friday morning. Fire officials say the station will likely be closed for the rest of the day.

The station has recently undergone a £50m redevelopment, incorporating a new tram bridge, including the restoration and upgrade of its Edwardian grade II-listed front building.

"We are aware of the incident and, at the minute, there are no reported casualties", she said.

Footage posted to social media shows flames and smoke billowing from the building.

Queens Road and Carrington Street were closed in both directions, which created heavy traffic on surrounding routes, but while there have been partial reopenings, disruption remains.

"That is because the fire is burning continuously through voids, which puts it out of sight and makes it incredibly hard for us to locate".

EMT also Tweeted to say: "We're working with emergency services to open access to the station vehicle park at Nottingham; unfortunately it isn't safe to access at the moment so remains closed". East Midlands Trains has done a great job ensuring no-one was hurt and everyone was evacuated safely.
