What Happens During Blackout at World's Biggest Tech Show

With AI playing a growing role across a range of technological areas, from biometric identification to autonomous driving, a number of major companies have stepped up their R&D in this area, and that boom is going to be reflected at CES.

Innovative modes of transport are also expected to play a big role in the show this year, from an electric vehicle created to seat just one person, the Solo from Canadian firm Electra Meccanica, to the world's smallest underwater scooter, the Sublue WhiteShark Mix. Only industry professionals and news media can attend the event, which is the largest convention yearly in Las Vegas.

Here's what to expect from the tech giants at this year's show.

Look At This Giant Detective Pikachu Amiibo
Crime is rampant in Ryme City, and it's up to a coffee-loving Pikachu to help uncover clues and put the bad guys behind bars. The move marks another step in the recent resurgence of Pokemon that began with Pokemon Go's release in 2016.

But smart home speakers and the AI assistants that power them have been predicted to be the most widely discussed technology at the event, according to analysts, with Amazon and Google set to lead the way.

Lyft said it will offer free autonomous robo-taxi rides - with a safety driver and an engineer ready to take over if something goes wrong. The massive four-day show officially opens Tuesday.

According to Toyota, the e-Pallette is a fully-automated, next generation battery electric vehicle (BEV) created to be scalable and customizable for a range of Mobility as a Service (MaaS) businesses. It has an SUV with a lot of touchscreens and technology, including the ability to monitor passenger vital signs. Intel had a tongue-in-cheek announcement for a product called "Blackout". Both large and smaller ones rely on the annual trade show to ink deals that will translate to cash months in the future; the blackout disrupted some of the product demos, panels and meetings key to those deals. "The answer that we're seeing is that people buy these [products] piecemeal and control them with their voice". The firsthigh-definition TVs were introduced two years later, courtesy of Sony, Thomson, Phillips, Panasonic and Zenith, while 2001 saw Bill Gates team up with Dwayne "The Rock' Johnson to launch Microsoft's first Xbox".
