Baby milk scare deepens in France

Baby food scandal hits France

Supermarket chain, Carrefour, said it had sold 434 products at risk of contamination since the December recall while France's biggest retailer Systeme U said it had sold almost one thousand products.

French President Emmanuel Macron's government is scrambling to save face after the alarming failure of a mass recall of baby milk prompted by a salmonella scare.

In a sign of how seriously France is taking the issue, Macron weighed in from Italy, also promising punishment for those responsible.

That health scare caused distrust in locally produced infant formula and benefited foreign suppliers such as Nestle NESN.N, Danone (DANO.PA) and Lactalis. Lactalis has annual sales of around 17 billion euros The halting of operations at the affected factory has led to a temporary lay off of 250 workers. A further 2,500 checks will be carried out from next week.

The baby products were still available in hospitals, day cares, pharmacies, and leading supermarkets well after last month's recall.

Eight Earthquakes Strike Iran-Iraq Border, Injuring 4
Another one was 5.2 magnitude at about 10:14 a.m. (0714 GMT), with 10 km depth, close to the first near Mandly, the USGS said. Several other earthquakes hit eastern Iran , according to USGS, and were also felt in Iraq's eastern and central provinces.

"The aim of this radical step is simple: to avoid delays, problems in sorting batches and the risk of human error", Le Maire told a news conference on Friday.

Lactalis, one of the largest diary product manufacturers worldwide, made the nationwide recall in December 2017 after one of the factory's assembly lines was found contaminated with salmonella.

Some of the products included in the recall were destined for markets overseas, including China.

Leclerc, France's biggest food retailer, said this week it had sold 984 products involved in the recall.

Desouches claimed the recall was complex and rejected the suggestion that Systéme U had taken too long to respond.
