Mark Zuckerberg vows to fix Facebook

Facebook boss Mark Zuckerberg has said his personal challenge for 2018 is to'fix the social site and how it handles abuse and fake news. The platform's founder said the firm was making'too many errors when enforcing its policies and stopping misuse

Read a book every other week.

2011 - Only eat animals he killed. For 2018, his 10th challenge is to work on Facebook's various issues. His list of targets at the social network included abuse and hate; interference by nation states, and, making sure visiting Facebook was time well spent. "We will not prevent all mistakes or immoral uses, but we are now making too many mistakes in implementing our policy and preventing abuse of our tools".

He added: "If we're successful this year then we'll end 2018 on a much better trajectory".

Mark Zuckerberg, chief executive officer and founder of Facebook Inc., speaks during the F8 Developers Conference in San Jose, Calif., April 18, 2017. Facebook - along with Google and Twitter - were dragged before a series of congressional hearings to testify on Russian election interference as a result.

A year ago was a doozy for Facebook. Some in Congress raised alarms about the vast power of these platforms and their seeming inability to police themselves. There's also been lots of speculation about Facebook's identity as well. Facebook has been described as enabling ethnic cleansing in Myanmar.

Additionally, she says Hollywood has been " very good " to her but also " failed to protect " her as a child actress. In response, Kramer denied the charges and said he and his wife were "taken aback" by her claims.

"Today feels a lot like that first year", Zuckerberg said pointing out at the promise that 2018 would be a year he would pour in every effort to gear up his business model as he had in its budding days. While Facebook often approaches issues like harassment with good intentions, they frequently go awry when its guidelines are misapplied - banning people who shouldn't be banned, or allowing people to stay who are clearly acting inappropriately.

But Zuckerberg also has little choice but to fix Facebook's problems.

While the company enjoyed a banner year on Wall Street, with shares of FB stock climbing more than 50 percent, it struggled to grapple with the fallout from the 2016 US election, when Russian trolls leveraged the social network to post fake stories and spread disinformation.

This has become an increasingly common critique of Facebook - and one Zuckerberg appeared to acknowledge by saying he wants time on the site to be "well spent". The social media giant partnered with independent fact-checking organizations, like Snopes and PolitiFact, to investigate. Zuckerberg's personal challenges are typically more personal, but this is what he has to say on the matter. The move fueled speculation Zuckerberg wanted to run for president, but some in the tech industry instead saw it as an attempt to assess the unintended consequences of his company.
