United Kingdom blames protests as Trump cancels trip

He took to Twitter to explain why he called off the visit, which had sparked fears of mass protests and would have been his first to the United Kingdom as President.

An invitation from May for Trump to visit Queen Elizabeth II has encountered growing opposition, fuelled in part by the president's Twitter criticism of London Mayor Sadiq Khan and his retweets of propaganda from a far-right British anti-Muslim group.

While the former embassy was on Grosvenor Square, in a tony area of designer boutiques and expensive restaurants, the new building is in a former industrial area south of the Thames that is being redeveloped into a new commercial and residential district.

On Friday the Mayor tweeted that Mr Trump had got the message that he was "not welcome" in London after the President cancelled a planned visit to open the new USA embassy.

A Trump visit has been on the cards since British Prime Minister Theresa May visited the United States a few days after Trump's inauguration past year. United States officials surveyed more than 50 sites before zeroing in on the site in Vauxhall, which is south of the river Thames, for the new embassy.

Many British politicians have voiced their opposition to Trump being granted a state visit, and say the invite should be recalled.

In Washington, White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders said Trump's comment was exclusively about an embassy-related visit. "His visit next month would without doubt have been met by mass peaceful protests".

A model of US President Donald Trump from the Madame Tussaud's waxwork attraction more than four miles away was placed outside the new embassy building, due to open for business on January 16, after the president's announcement.

One prominent British Trump fan suggested he may have been looking for a good excuse to call off a visit.

May's spokesman told reporters Trump was welcome in London and that the invitation to visit had been accepted, although no date agreed.

"Let's hope that Donald Trump also revisits the pursuit of his divisive agenda". But Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson blamed Khan and Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn for discouraging the USA leader from coming.

British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson fired back at Khan on Twitter, saying on Friday that he would "not allow US-UK relations to be endangered" by the London Mayor, whom he referred to as a "pompous puffed up popinjay in City Hall".

Relations between the USA and its closest ally have been tested repeatedly since Trump took office nearly a year ago.
