Jason Roy described his record-breaking innings against Australia at the MCG on Sunday as "incredibly special" after helping England beat the hosts by five wickets in the first ODI.

Skipper Morgan praised Roy's knock but cautioned his team against complacency entering the second ODI at Brisbane on Friday.

Roy surpassed teammate Alex Hales's previous ODI best of 171 during his 151-ball knock as England cruised home with seven balls to spare in a morale-boosting victory, after a demoralising 4-0 loss in the Ashes Tests. Captain Steve Smith got off to a quick start (23 from 18 balls) before edging one off wrist spinner Adil Rashid (2/73).

Moeen, who endured a dismal Ashes, gave up just 39 in his 10 overs and Australia's total was insufficient despite Finch's ninth ODI hundred.

Marsh went on to make 50 off 68 deliveries, which included two boundaries and two sixes, before he was cleaned up by Rashid.

Roy survived being given out and several close calls before eventually being caught for 180 to help guide his side to a five-wicket success to kick-off the five-match series in winning fashion.

Jason Roy was nearly lost for words after his record-breaking innings helped England draw a line under their Ashes woes by beating Australia in the one-day worldwide series opener at the MCG.

There was a nice moment before play when Jos Buttler was handed his 100th ODI cap by James Anderson, but Roy and Root's innings meant he had little to do with the bat, dismissed for a 10-ball four having strode to the wicket at No 6 after Morgan (1) picked out point. He chanced his arm and it came off and he was supported really well by Root.

Roy got his side's chase off to a flying start with a succession of boundaries off Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins, although both bowlers were able to claim early wickets as the departures of Jonny Bairstow (14) and Hales - who made four after being restored to the team at number three - left England 60-2 from just 5.5 overs. I don't really have too many words right now but it was just a huge honour to be out there for England again and get some runs on the board. "They got off to an absolute flyer", Smith said. "It sums up the character of the bloke, coming back in".

And on passing Hales' record: "He wasn't too happy about that by the sounds of things, it's one of the first things the boys said about Halesy being pretty disappointed".

Roy struck England's highest one-day score to guide his side to victory.

"It was a tough season last season so to be selected this time was incredibly special".
