Kevin Sumlin to be new Arizona football coach

Stephen Lew-USA TODAY Sports

In a statement, Texas A&M athletic director Scott Woodward thanked Sumlin for his service to A&M but said it was time for the 53-year-old to be fired. He owns a career record of 86-43 during his six seasons in College Station and four at the University of Houston.

The University of Arizona appears to have found its next football coach.

Texas A&M hired former Florida State coach Jimbo Fisher to replace Sumlin.

Former Dallas Cowboys VP of player personnel Gil Brandt tweeted this afternoon that Sumlin to Arizona is "official".

Feldman also reported Sumlin will retain defensive coordinator Marcel Yates, with Noel Mazzone and Clarence McKinney expected to join the staff as offensive coordinator and running backs coach.

Lamya Khaled Nasser, a 32-year-old football fan from Jeddah , told AFP she was proud and looking forward to the match. However, they were forced to sit in a "family section" that separated them from the male fans.

Kevin Sumlin's hiring at Arizona is imminent, multiple sources have told Sporting News.

Navy head coach Ken Niumatalolo was rumored to be in the mix, but has reportedly removed himself from contention. Sumlin guided A&M to an 11-2 record, led by Manziel, who won the Heisman that season. Sumlin will have the immediate benefit of working with quarterback Khalil Tate who burst on the scene last last fall combining for close to 3,000 total yards a sophomore. Even with the early January firing of Rodriguez being less than ideal timing for Arizona, they are now set to hire someone based on their actual merits as a football coach.

According to the terms of his contract, A&M owed Sumlin more than $10 million on a contract that expired in 2019.

His first season at Texas A&M was 2012, when the Aggies took the SEC by storm in their first season after moving from the Big 12.
