Turkey rips US-led coalition for building border force in northern Syria

Erdogan Terror clearance operation to continue in Syria’s Afrin

Turkey is set to launch attack on a Kurdish enclave in northern Syria "in the coming days".

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said the operation against the Afrin enclave aims to "purge terror" from his country's southern border.

The Turkish forces were firing from Turkey's southern province Hatay and the observation point in Syria's Idlib province.

Rojhat Roj said the shelling of areas in Afrin district, in Aleppo province, killed one YPG fighter and wounded several civilians on Sunday.

Turkey has long protested US support for the PKK/PYD while Washington sees it as a "reliable ally" in its fight against Daesh in Syria.

Raqqa in Syria was taken back from ISIL by the USA -backed SDF, but the U.S.is not likely to end their cooperation with the PKK-affiliated groups as they promised their North Atlantic Treaty Organisation ally Turkey, against which the PKK has been waging fatal attacks for the last three decades. But the USA has been arming some of Syria's Kurds to defeat the Islamic State group in Syria - a sore point in already tense U.S.

"I hope that during an Afrin operation, these powers will not make the mistake of appearing to be on the same side as a terror organisation", Erdogan said in an apparent reference to the USA during the rally in the northern Turkish city of Tokat.

"The United States is making concerning threats by attempting to legitimize and solidify the PYD terror group while it instead should cease the support", Kalin said.

Erdoğan referred to the US cooperation with the People's Protection Units (YPG), the Syrian extension of the PKK, as the backbone of the SDF in the fight against the Islamic State of Iraq and Levant (ISIL).

In a written statement, the ministry noted that it was not clear with which coalition members the USA consulted and has taken the decision to establish such a force.

Ibrahim Kalin, the presidential spokesman, said the USA was taking steps to legitimize and solidify the YPG.

He went on to say that Turkey has taken no measure to counter the terrorist group in the region.

Following a fragile cease-fire, the group resumed fighting in July 2015.

Turkish soldiers are now based in rebel-held territory on both sides of Afrin.

YPG will fight to "defend our gains, our territories", Roj said.
