Two bodies recovered from stricken oil tanker

Shanghai: A Chinese salvage team has recovered two bodies from a stricken Iranian oil tanker, that was still blazing a week after it caught fire and was left adrift following a collision in the East China Sea, state news agency Xinhua reports.

There were 30 Iranians and two Bangladeshis working as crew onboard.

Footage of the rescue showed parts of the Sanchi still aflame, its hull and superstructure completely stripped of paint.

The 21 Chinese crew member of the Crystal, which did not burst into flames, were all rescued.

The body of another crew member was found last week.

The cause of the collision has not yet been ascertained. In addition, from my perspective, oil burning is less polluting than an oil spill.

Taqikhani also stressed that everyone knows this is a very hard and unsafe task, but if helicopters are handed over by the Chinese army and they take the risk of taking this action, then the rangers may rappel from high altitudes.

Earlier Sunday, Chinese state media carried pictures of the tanker on fire with large plumes of smoke.

The vessel was making a delivery to South Korea and carrying a highly flammable ultra-light crude when it collided with the ship and erupted in flames.

The Sanchi has operated under five different names since it was built in 2008, according the United Nations -run International Maritime Organization.

On January 6, Iranian oil tanker Sanchi, registered in Panama, and Hong Kong's СF Crystal cargo ship collided off the Chinese eastern coast.

Twelve Iranian rescue workers had been brought to Shanghai to help and will join rescue work soon, Lu Kang, a spokesman from China's foreign ministry, told a regular briefing. He Wang says it could take 1 to 2 more weeks before the fire on the oil tanker dies down, because of the huge amount of product on board - some 111,000 tons of condensate oil.

"We have no information on their fate", he said.

The company that bought the condensate is South Korean Hanwa Total Petrochemical, a joint venture between South Korean Hanwa General Chemicals and French Total. Total did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The report came after the vessel's owner, the National Iranian Tanker Company (NITC) said Sanchi was unlikely to sink.
