Accord, Navigator, XC60 take top prize at Detroit auto show

The 2018 Honda Accord was named the North American Car of the Year at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit Mich. Monday

The Accord shared the award with the Volvo XC60 and Lincoln Navigator, which were named Utility of the Year and Truck of the Year, respectively.

Thanks to the Accord, Honda won awards for three years straight. Arcangeli calls the Accord "new from the ground up", with more coupe-like styling and its first-ever turbocharged engines.

It's the first auto of the year award for all three nameplates, although Honda and Volvo have both won the award recently.

The Truck class proved somewhat controversial this year as the NACTOY committee chose to put two SUVs, the body-on-frame Ford Expedition and Lincoln Navigator, in the truck class against the Chevrolet Colorado ZR2, the only actual truck. Volvo's XC60 beat out the Alfa Romeo Stelvio and Honda Odyssey. "It was time to create a new Navigator and take that rightful place in the segment for Lincoln". The General Motors luxury brand sold 14,700 Escalades past year.

Sixty automotive journalists serve as judges. The winners of the 2017 awards were the Chevy Bolt EV, Chrylser Pacifica, and Honda Ridgeline.

The judging panel considered a variety of attributes to determine the winners, including innovation, design, safety, performance, technology, driver satisfaction and value.

Organizers accept no advertising, though automakers try to capitalize on the marketing value of the awards, which are now in their 24th year.
