Ford plans to invest 11 billion United States dollars in development of electric cars

Ford just had its worst day in a year and a half

Executive chairman Bill Ford told reporters at the Detroit Auto Show yesterday that the company was working on plans to deliver 16 fully electric and 24 plug-in hybrid vehicles over the next five years.

The Detroit-based company previously said that it would invest 4.5 billion USA dollars in electric products by 2020, and on Sunday it said that this number would rise to 11 billion dollars.

By 2022, the concern should have a total of 40 models that will be either fully electric or hybrid.

On Jan. 13 General Motors said it has filed a safety petition with the U.S. Department of Transportation for its self-driving Cruise vehicle.

GM Chief Executive Mary Barra has promised investors the Detroit automaker will make money selling electric cars by 2021. His deputy James Hackett vowed to cut costs and eliminate some of the cars in the series to redirect the company's future to pickup, SUV and electric vehicles.

Speaking at Auto Show on Sunday, Mr Ford said the focus would be on electrifying existing Ford models without naming any specific cars. The company will begin production of a hybrid version of its popular F-150 truck at a plant in Dearborn, Michigan, in 2020. "There's no doubt that we've entered this period of disruption, you all know that".

Ford's shift to e-mobility has been more than six months in the making, after CEO Jim Hackett replaced his predecessor Mark Fields in May.

Ford is getting prepared for tougher pollution standards in countries all around the world, as China, UK, France, and Germany have already planned, or are planning, to ban the sale of conventional combustion engine vehicles.
