Bad WiFi? These Google products could be 'shutting down' your home internet

Many users reported experiencing Wi-Fi connectivity problems after setting up a Google Chromecast or Google Home speaker.

Google's suite of products in the past few years have been pretty awesome overall, with Chromecast and Home devices among the best.

WiFi routers from other companies, including Linksys, Asus, Netgear, and Synology are also reportedly affected.

TP-Link has issued firmware fixes for the problem and explained in a statement that the issue lies in how these devices send information to routers when they're awakened from their sleep states.

If you're suffering from the issue, TP-Link recommends disabling the Cast feature on your Android phone and/or tablet for now. The first report about the Google Home Max included the issue between Home Max and the TP-Link Archer C7 router.

If you also have a Cast or Home device and have been facing connectivity issues then you are not alone as several users seem to be impacted by the same issue. A Google Products expert on the official Product Forums stated that the company was looking into the issue. The tool sends MDNS multicast discovery packets in 20-second intervals in order to maintain a live connection with smart home products like the Chromecast and Home.

The engineer believes it's because of how much data the devices are sending to the router when these devices emerge from sleep mode. This can cause surges of more than 100,000 packets in a short window - the amount of packets sent is directly proportional to the amount of time the device stays asleep.

The longer the device is in sleep mode, the larger the packet will be, sometimes even going beyond 100000 packets.

Because of the thousands of packets being shared, the router needs to turn off or shut down connections. The only way to fix it is by rebooting the Wi-Fi router.

The original problem was patched fairly quickly by TP-Link, and if you own the Archer C7 router you should go update it with this beta firmware. The source of the issue is linked to these devices. Although Google is working on a fix, which is likely to arrive as an update, there is no specific time frame mentioned for it.
