Google unveils $30bn infrastructure investment plans

Diagram shows three new subsea cable investments expanding capacity to Chile Asia Pacific and across the Atlantic

Google aims to ramp up its cloud computing business by hooking up five new regions and adding three subsea cables expanding its networks for its customers the company said on Tuesday.

Google will commission the work.

While these are new submarine cables, Google is hardly a novice in the undersea cabling arena.

The Havfrue, which will connect the United States to Denmark and Ireland will come online by the end of 2019 is consortium run with Facebook, Aqua Comms and Bulk Infrastructure and will increase capacity in the North Atlantic systems. As explained on the Keyword, those will be followed by new openings in Los Angeles, Finland, and Hong Kong. The cable, dubbed Unity, was meant to address the need for broadband for data and internet traffic between Asia and the U.S. At the time, the project would add up to 7.68 Terabits per second (Tbps) of bandwidth across the Pacific. The team claims it has pumped $30 billion into cloud infrastructure over the last three years, and announcements like this imply the big spending will continue.

Google has hatched a plan to build three submarine cable networks next year with an aim of getting a jump on its key competitors, Amazon Web Services and Microsoft.

'Most importantly, PLCN will bring lower latency, more security, and greater bandwidth to Google users in the APAC region'. The five new Cloud Platform regions will be added to the 13 existing regions. The HK-G, an acronym for Hong Kong-Guam, is another consortium cable interconnecting major subsea communication hubs in Asia.

Google said its network now delivers around 25 per cent of worldwide internet traffic.

The Curie cable, named after scientist Marie curie, will make Google the first major non-telecom company to build a private intercontinental cable.

"Since we control the design and construction process, we can fully define the cable's technical specifications, streamline deployment and deliver service to users and customers faster", Ben Treynor Sloss, VP of 24x7 operations at Google stated. That cable, called Marea, was completed in late 2017. "From datacentres to subsea cables, Google is committed to connecting the world and serving our cloud customers", he said.

Google has direct investment in a total of 11 cables, including these upcoming projects.
