Venezuela coup 'action hero' Oscar Pérez is captured by Maduro forces

Who Is Oscar Perez? 'Venezuelan James Bond' Who Tried to Stage Coup Is Surrounded by Authorities

Venezuelan officials say on Monday, Jan. 15, 2018 they've exchanged fire during an attempt to capture the fugitive police officer who led a high-profile attack in Caracas a year ago from a stolen helicopter.

Perez, an ex-forensic cop and action film star, allegedly hijacked a police helicopter and attacked the Supreme Court last summer, when Venezuela was convulsed by anti-government protests. The deaths weren't confirmed.

It said in a statement that Perez's group had "tried to detonate a vehicle loaded with explosives", adding that at least two police officers and an unspecified number of the ex-officer's companions died during the shootout.

Nestor Reverol, minister of the interior, justice and peace, did not provide details on the death of Perez, who a year ago said he belonged to a coalition of military, police and civil officials "who oppose this criminal government".

The cell had planned to set off a auto bomb outside the embassy of "a beloved and prestigious country", Maduro said. Many within Venezuela have cast doubt on the legitimacy of his attacks, seeing them as a potential ruse to support President Nicolas Maduro's assertion the nation is regularly assaulted by opposition conspirators, though some friends have spoken in his defense.

In all, 125 people were killed between April and July as authorities used force to put down protests to unseat Maduro.

Authorities finally tracked Perez down in the poor hillside neighborhood of El Junquito on Monday. It also details that the security forces were attacked by terrorists when they were negotiating the terms of surrender and that members of the violent group resisted opening fire.

Earlier Monday, Perez posted videos on social media saying his group was under attack.

Perez can be seen hunched down, with blood on his face and a machine gun in is hands.

Perez is accused of leading the group responsible for firing 15 shots at the Interior Ministry, where 80 people were still working, before throwing four grenades at the Supreme Court, where a session of the Constitutional Court was taking place. "Don't doubt it", he said in a message to the country in the Constituent Assembly. No one was injured in the incidents and Perez managed to flee before authorities swarmed in.

Perez appeared with a bloody face in almost a dozen dramatic Instagram videos early on Monday, saying that he was surrounded by authorities shooting at him with grenade launchers.
