Walmart Joins Fight Against Opioid Abuse With Free Disposal Kits

Metro Police officers are shown outside a Walmart after a shooting in Las Vegas

Wal-Mart Stores (WMT), seeking to curb opioid abuse, will offer its pharmacy customers a product that disposes of unwanted or expired prescription drugs.

When mixed with warm water and prescription medication in a pill bottle, DisposeRX creates a solid that can then be thrown out safely in the trash, without the risk of contaminating groundwater, its maker says. The product, in addition to eliminating the risk of addiction or accidental poisoning, wipes away concerns that tossed-out drugs will contaminate water supplies.

Walmart already was among pharmacies that drugs.

Some pharmacies, including CVS and Walgreens, for disposal.

A federal judge last week, however, ruled that while he sympathized with the Cherokee Nation's mission, the tribe did not have jurisdiction to sue, according to the New York Times.

In a release, Walmart referenced information from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration and the National Institute of Drug Abuse that shows more than 65 percent of people who misuse prescription opioids acquire them from friends and family. Few pharmacists and physicians used the system, though.

The list of Class II narcotics also includes hydromorphone (Dilaudid), methadone (Dolophine), meperidine (Demerol), oxycodone (OxyContin, Percocet) and are by the DEA as drugs with a high potential for abuse, and can lead to severe psychological or physical dependence.

As Fortune reported in an in-depth report on the crisis in September, an American is now far likelier to die of a drug overdose than in a auto crash.

Wal Mart (WMT) now distributes safety brochures with prescriptions and offers to counsel on safe opioid usage.

The powder works on other prescription drugs and for pills, tablets, capsules, patches or liquids alike, DisposeRX says.

Walmart touted an endorsement of its move from Sen., R-Ark., where the company's headquarters is located.

Senator John Boozman of Arkansas reveals how "about one-third of medications sold go unused. I commend Walmart for taking this innovative approach to help keep unused prescription drugs out of the wrong hands".
