Among Warmest Years On Record

Earth's Warming Continued in 2017. And That Was Without El Niño.

On the other hand, NASA calculated if the temperature contributions of El Nino and El Nina were removed from the global data through the years, 2017 would go down as the hottest year on record, NASA chief climate scientist Gavin Schmidt said. The agencies said the discrepancy in the rankings was the result of different methods that they use to analyze global temperature data, but that overall, their assessments on the state of the global climate are in agreement.

Both put 2017 behind 2016's record temperatures.

Findings from both NASA and NOAA were shown to be closely aligned with recent analyses conducted by the World Meteorological Organization and the UK's Meteorological Office - the two most widely revered temperature authorities in the world.

NASA discovered that 2017 was 1.6 degrees Fahrenheit (.9 degrees Celsius) higher than the average temperature from 1951 through 1980. Had there been no man-made warming, 2017 would have been average or slightly cooler than normal, said National Center for Atmospheric Research climate scientist Ben Sanderson.

The globally averaged temperature in 2017 was about 0.46°C above the 1981-2010 long-term average of 14.3°C - a 30-year baseline used by national meteorological and hydrological services to assess averages and variability of key climate parameters, which are important for climate-sensitive sectors, such as water management, energy, agriculture and health. 2017, in contrast, merely stayed within the elevated temperature range that these prior years had already established.

In fact, 2017 is second only to global temperatures in 2016, and climate change deniers can't even blame it on El Niño, because the weather pattern wasn't wreaking havoc a year ago. The findings are nearly definitely due to climate change, the scientists said, which is predominantly caused by greenhouse gas emissions created by people.

"The record temperature should focus the minds of world leaders, including President Trump, on the scale and urgency of the risks that people, rich and poor, face around the world from climate change".

In addition to the official US agencies, a number of additional expert outlets have tracked temperatures and found results consistent with those of NOAA and NASA.

"Seventeen of the 18 warmest years on record have all been during this century, and the degree of warming during the past three years has been exceptional".

"The Arctic has warmed 2 and a half degrees C since the middle of the century", he said. "So much of the difference in 2017 between the groups that find it in second place and third place has to do with how the Arctic is handled".

The warming trend was clear in both land and sea temperature measurements. Mooney reports on science and the environment.
