The Supreme Court Has Agreed To Rule On Trump's Latest Travel Ban

Trump administration asks Supreme Court to immediately accept DACA case

The US Supreme Court on Friday set up a major showdown over presidential powers, agreeing to decide the legality of President Donald Trump's latest travel ban targeting people from six Muslim-majority countries.

The court will start hearing arguments in April and intends to issue a final ruling in June on an issue that has been repeatedly struck down by lower courts, reports The Independent. They say the travel ban has no precedent in U.

The Supreme Court is now preparing to hear a challenge to the ban, in a case called Trump v. Hawaii, meaning the issue may finally be decided after a year or protests, edits, and reversals in the courts.

But the Supreme Court dismissed those appeals in October after the second ban expired.

The current executive order is actually the third version of the ban after the first was dropped and replace by a second version in March a year ago. The policy's opponents say it's illegally discriminatory against religion. The justices in June allowed much of the travel ban to take effect, except for those who already had established close ties to people or institutions in this country. Justices Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Sonia Sotomayor dissented.

Trump is now on Version 3 of the travel ban, which imposes restrictions on travelers from Chad, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Syria and Yemen, as well as two countries that are not Muslim majority: Venezuela and North Korea.

USA nuclear review calls for development of low-yield weapons

Federal district judge Derrick Watson ruled in October that the administration did not prove letting 150 million nationals from majority-Muslim countries follow regular immigration procedures would be "detrimental to the interests of the United States".

In his brief urging the Supreme Court to hear the case, Solicitor General Noel J. Francisco wrote that the president has vast constitutional and statutory authority over immigration.

But the justices said they will hear the administration's appeal of that decision in Trump vs. Hawaii and rule on whether the latest "proclamation is a lawful exercise of the president's authority to suspend entry of aliens abroad" and consider whether it violates the Constitution's ban on religious discrimination.

Lawyers for the challengers told the justices that Trump's own statements provided powerful evidence of anti-Muslim animus.

The case before a three-judge panel at the 7th US Circuit Court of Appeals stems from a city of Chicago lawsuit. Lower courts had partially blocked the ban.
