A total lunar eclipse will be visible in Alberta Wednesday

Rick Elphic, a planetary scientist at NASA Ames Research Center in Mountain View, is part of a group studying the moon using instruments aboard the spacecraft called the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter.

January 31 brings a lunar trifecta: the super blue blood Moon! Supermoons are those that occur when the moon is at its closest approach (perigee) on its orbit around the earth.

The southern part of the Moon may appear slightly brighter due to the Moon's path through the umbral shadow being a little lower than dead center. Because of the timing of the full moons, February will not have one and March will have two. Full moons are typically. It's also the second full moon of the month, commonly known as a "blue moon".

He explained that it's been two years since the last lunar eclipse, but over 150 years since that coincided with a blue moon. Some Sun light is refracted through Earth's atmosphere and it is this bending of Sun light through the atmosphere that gives the eclipsed Moon it's reddish hue.

This is because Native American tribes kept track of the months of the year by the lunar calendar.

Finally, at 6:08 a.m., the total eclipse will end, with the moon slipping back into a partial eclipse.

Paris braces for another week of flooding as River Seine rises
For the greater Paris region as a whole, some 400 people have been evacuated and almost 1,000 people were without electricity. The flooding has already inundated roads, railways and walking paths in Paris along the river, according to The Local .

So, people on the East Coast are scr. out of luck?

Americans in the east are advised to head outside to a high place at 6.45am ET, while those in the mid-west will have the best viewing at 6.15am-6.30am CST time.

According to TimeAndDate.com, the eclipse will begin at 4:51 a.m. Wednesday when the moon enters Earth's penumbra, a secondary shadow cast by the sun's light against Earth. The eclipse will be visible before sunrise on January 31 for those in North America, Alaska and Hawaii. The partial eclipse begins at 3:48 am.

"Weather permitting, the West Coast, Alaska and Hawaii will have a spectacular view of totality from start to finish", NASA's Gordon Johnston said in a statement.

The challenge for central OH viewers will be two-fold: increasing high clouds during the pre-dawn hours on Wednesday, and the narrow window to view the partial lunar eclipse, locally. For a lunar eclipse, it's the same idea: you still have shadows, but in this case, it's the Earth blocking off the sunlight for the moon. Although that one will be a supermoon, it won't be a blue moon. NASA has said that people all across the globe - if you have access to the internet - will still be able to view the entire show wherever they are.

Set your alarms, space fans - if you can drag yourself out of bed next Wednesday, you're in for a treat.
