Verizon's plan to sell Huawei phone suffocated by political pressure

US security agencies and some lawmakers fear that 5G phones made by companies that may have close ties to the Chinese government could pose a security risk

Earlier this month, AT&T pulled out of a deal with Huawei to sell the Mate 10 Pro after receiving similar pressure.

Roughly two weeks after USA telecom giant AT&T announced that it would cease the company's commercial relationship with Chinese hardware manufacturer Huawei, Verizon has announced plans to do the same. Meanwhile, the Verizon did seem to be cooperating with the company, but they too were under high pressure.

Amidst pressure from the U.S. government not to do business with the Chinese company, major carrier Verizon has reportedly scrapped all plans to officially carry Huawei devices, including the well-reviewed Mate 10 Pro.

In fact, the province of British Columbia and national carrier Telus are now collaborating with Huawei on 5G network tests. As nearly every major carriers of the United States have refused to sell the Huawei branded devices anymore, it will be a hard time ahead for Huawei to reach customers.

Huawei's ambitions to sell its phones in the United States appear to remain just out of reach.

Grammys president said women need to "step up" after male-heavy awards
At this year's Grammy Awards , there was constant discussion about gender equality, the #MeToo movement and women's rights . The producer of the award show, Ken Ehrlich , took a slightly different take.

Bloomberg's sources claim the decision could be due to pressure from the USA government, which is concerned about Chinese smartphones being used for spying.

These politicians sent a letter to FCC chairman Ajit Pai, voicing concerns over "Chinese espionage in general, and Huawei's role in that espionage in particular".

The latest report from Bloomberg now also mentions 5G, at a time when Huawei is striving to be the first to launch a 5G-capable smartphone. A phone with Chinese 5G networking equipment could feasibly allow a backdoor to U.S. network activity for the Chinese government. Unfortunately, that didn't pan out, and reports are that the USA government would like very much for AT&T to cut all ties with the smartphone manufacturer.

As Huawei is facing suspicions of having ties with the Chinese government, the Mate 10 Pro with 5G capabilities apparently qualifies as a Chinese device under investigation because it might pose security threats. But many had to refuse due to the pressure from the USA government. Huawei first drew U.S. attention in 2003 when it was sued by Cisco under accusations that it stole source code to build its network routers. The company was making a major push to sell phones into the USA this year.
