Independent report commissioned by BBC denies gender pay gap

Marr will follow in footsteps of other male broadcasters

The report, carried out by accountancy firm PricewaterhouseCoopers, acknowledges that the broadcaster's approach to setting pay for those considered, "historically has been far from perfect". It makes these men look like heroes and sort of exonerates the company in the public eye but it doesn't fix the gap or the systemic inequities in the pay structure. The national average is 18%.

Unsworth told BBC News: "Well, I think it's the point ... that these really are operating in different markets".

They added: "I refused to back down and eventually was given the same rate as my male colleague and it was backdated".

What else did the report find?

Many men also were also found to be receiving much larger salaries than women in comparable jobs.

The BBC will review the progression of women in the corporation, looking at working practices and support for women returning to work.

Said Lord Hall: "Presenters are the link between our audiences and ourselves, and a lot of presenters and a lot of editors I know too, work their socks off, they work very, very hard indeed and we need to reflect that in pay".

The BBC will now consult staff and unions and seek feedback on PwC's proposals before developing a final set of proposals with legal experts.

While publishing today's review, BBC director-general Tony Hall said: "The BBC believes in equality".

Chris Christie steps out of spotlight, joins ABC News
We've all gone through this before", Christie said , "and I don't think we've met that high standard yet as to President Trump. However, Brian Murray, the governor's spokesman, confirmed Christie was at the beach, according to multiple reports .

In a statement, a BBC spokesman said: "The BBC is committed to equal pay, and we don't accept the assertion we have not been complying with the Equality Act, nor do we offer inferior contracts based on someone's gender or race".

"That said, when I was starting out at the BBC ..."

"But if any of that is current, then it needs to be raised".

The Metro runs with the headline: "The "Farce" & The Furious", and says women at the corporation reacted with "anger and disbelief" at the report. "This is a PwC report commissioned by the and, without being overly cynical, I might venture to suggest that the PwC has delivered the report the has asked for", she said. You don't bring rights down in order to achieve equality, you bring people up", she said, "In Canada, the law is: if there's discrimination, you bring the women's pay up. Its chairman, Damien Collins, told BBC Radio on Tuesday that the pay problem was extensive.

Although the disparity in the news department was not as great, three news presenters earned over £500,000 and all three were men. In face of debate, six of station's main news anchors agreed to lower ir salaries last week.

The BBC has promised a "new framework" on pay as it publishes its own conclusions on the money it gives male and female correspondents, presenters and on-air editors.

Among those receiving pay cuts are the presenters Jeremy Vine, Huw Edwards and John Humphrys.

The figure covered all staff, on and off air, and was put down to the fact there are more men in senior jobs. What if the Tesco in south Tottenham, say, happened to have more male than female line managers? Her resignation revived criticism of Britain's publicly funded broadcaster, which last summer published the salaries of its top stars.
