Kasganj violence: Main accused Salim nabbed in Chandan Gupta's murder

Uttar pradesh Kasganj violence Shops torched properties vandalised by mob police on spot

Inspector general (Aligarh) Sanjeev Gupta said that Salim, who was hiding in Kasganj since the incident, has admitted that he had opened fire at Chandan from the terrace of a building.

Another 15-second video shot from the roof a building shows a group of men moving on the road below the building.

The police, meanwhile, are examining two video clips that are purportedly about the events of January 26. Demanding a government job for a member of his family, VHP also requested Adityanath to give a compensation of Rs 50 lakh and a house to the kin of the deceased. Another man, identified as Akram, received head injuries.

One person was killed and some others were injured in communal clashes during Republic Day celebrations last Friday.

A day later, violence broke out again when people returning from Gupta's cremation went on a rampage.

On another note, the internet services, which were suspended in Kasganj region after the violence, were restored today.

The countryside, however, remained tense, with some places witnessing attempts by miscreants to disrupt peace.

In a related incident, the Centre too sought a detailed report on Kasganj violence from the UP government. In addition, a lot of preventive arrests have also been made, he said.

The government conveyed to the Home Ministry that the police were investigating the case and all facts are being ascertained to know if the violence was pre-planned.

The police are also looking into the footage of youth taking out the Tiranga Yatra with Chandan Gupta moving on a motorcycle with associates, three youth torching a shop at night and unidentified people setting buses and vehicles on fire in the market.

Several questions have been asked in the report including, what was the reason behind the spread of violence? The news had gone viral on social media, fuelling anger among the people.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath yesterday warned of strict action against the perpetrators of violence.

Locals reportedly objected to some slogans raised.

"Why? Are they (Muslims) Pakistanis?"

Speaking to ANI, Katiyar said, "Kasganj incident is extremely unfortunate". During the visit, there was a clash between the two communities. They demanded Chandan Gupta be declared a martyr and the guilty party are arrested. Kasganj district authorities have prohibited the entry of any political leader in the city.

The delegation was denied permission by the Kasganj District Magistrate RK Singh citing law and order problem.
