Journalist says BBC treating women as 'enemy' over pay gap

The BBC's journalism can not be trusted unless it is truthful about its gender pay gap, the corporation's former China editor Carrie Gracie has said.

Gracie said that the BBC must "report the truth" in this matter in order to lead the way for other businesses across the country dealing with "gender pay gap" issues.

The BBC's former China editor, Carrie Gracie, resigned from her post earlier this year, claiming male counterparts were being paid at least 50 per cent more.

A group of BBC women who have been campaigning for equal pay dismissed the report as a whitewash. She had also been offered a £45,000 pay rise.

"He was at an alumni event that (Unsworth) was at the day after the pay disclosures, and he told me he had asked her why myself and the Europe editor were not on the high pay list, and he said, as reported by him, 'I don't understand why they're not on the list, Carrie Gracie and Katya Adler work so hard, why wouldn't they be on the list?'"

She said at the end of the process the BBC agreed to increase her salary and pay her for money she had missed out on in previous years, but said: "I have said I don't want that money".

The PwC found the discrepancy in pay being wider in lower-profile presenting roles.

News of the pay boost scheme being more in favor of men than women caused an outcry on social media, given recent reports that put the overall pay gap at the at 9.3 percent.

In a two-hour hearing, Gracie also said Unsworth's predecessor as BBC News director James Harding had also been not telling the truth in public late past year. But he said there was "a difference between the scale and scope" of jobs that meant salaries varied.

She said: "We, the BBC, will be reporting on it, obviously". The BBC has a special role representing Britain. "I knew as did many other women in the BBC that we had been underpaid by comparison to male peers".

Gracie said once confronted, the corporation tried to "throw money at me to resolve the problem".

Humphrys was criticised after a leaked tape showed him joking with Sopel about Gracie and the gender pay gap.

Gracie's words cut to the core the problem for the BBC. In response to Tuesday's report, the BBC said there would be "substantial" pay reductions for some men and pay increases for some men and women.

She later discovered that the BBC's North America editor, Jon Sopel, was making between 200 000 (about R3.3 million) and 249 999 pounds (about R4.2 million) and the Middle East editor Jeremy Bowen between 150 000 and 199 999 pounds. "I was very upset in when a former member of staff told me that the current director of news [Fran Unsworth] had given the impression that I was part-time", she added.
